Camp ovens are brilliant. They can be used over a fire, in hot coals or even on a gas stove. They are very versatile - you can cook roasts, stews, soups, desserts, cakes, breads - whatever. They do take a bit of practice though. The more you use them the better the camp oven becomes and the more skilled you become. With practice you can impress your mates. When cooking over a fire, you do not need much heat. You cannot cook successfully over a big fire - besides it will be too hot to get close to check your masterpiece. A couple of shovels of coals in a hole beside the fire or under a grill works well. Camp ovens can be hung on a tripod or placed on a grill over a fire. Being able to adjust the heat is essential.
